What Is A Doula?

Many people ask me, “What is a Doula?” Similar to hiring a travel guide while exploring a foreign country, a doula helps expecting families navigate through the different phases of childbirth. The main purpose of a doula is to provide continuous physical, emotional and informational support to expecting families during conception (fertility), pregnancy, childbirth or loss (Full Spectrum Doula) and after..

While doulas are not medical professionals who deliver babies or provide medical care, they are highly trained experts on how to help and support expectant mothers and their families through the life changing experience that is childbirth. Studies have shown that doula care remarkably increases the physical and psychological outcomes for both mother and newborn. Scientific trials have found that women who use a doula have shorter labor, are less likely to need a C-section, request less pain medication, have more success breastfeeding and report an overall more positive childbirth experience.

Pre-Birth Responsibilities

Before childbirth, I will meet with you to get acquainted so you can determine whether I am a good fit for your family and needs as a doula. If you want to proceed, I offer up to 2 prenatal visits where I cover a wide variety of topics. These visits are structured around your needs and include sharing information with your partner on comfort measures for birth, self-advocacy, exercises for optimal fetal positioning, and more! I will also answer any questions you may have about the birthing process, provide information on labor and delivery procedures, and any possible complications. During this time, we will develop a birth plan to ensure you feel secure, comfortable and prepared.

Birthing Process Responsibilities

During labor I will stay by your side to provide consistent comfort and support. At this point, my main purpose is to ensure birthing is a positive and non-stressful experience. This may include physically supporting you in alternative (upright and gravity positive) positions, use of heat/cold therapy for pain relief, and breathing techniques, touch, or visualization for relaxation. I will also help you maintain your fluid and nutrition intake, make sure you use the bathroom frequently, and communicate any of your needs or preferences to medical staff – whatever creates the most soothing environment for you.

There is misconception that doulas only provide care for those women interested in natural childbirth / unmedicated births, however this could not be farther from the truth! Doulas provide care for women who give birth with or without pain medication, women who have disabilities, women with planned cesarean sections, women who have unplanned cesarean sections, women who are planning a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) and everything in between! Doulas are for women who want to have a positive and beautiful birthing experience from start to finish. At this point, my main purpose is to support and ensure birthing is a positive and non-stressful experience. I will make sure baby and you receive adequate nutrition and fluids, will communicate your needs and preferences to medical staff, and will involve/reassure the dad-to-be.

Postpartum Care Responsibilities

After labor I will provide encouragement and information on bringing your newborn home and transitioning into a home routine. I can provide information on how to care for your new baby, assist with breastfeeding education, as well as teach dad and siblings how to better support you and the new baby. I will assist in any capacity to ensure you get plenty of rest, eat regularly, stay hydrated and feel absolutely comfortable so your body can recover.

In Cases of Stillborn/Miscarriage

In the most unfortunate situations, I will create a safe and sacred space for mother experiencing loss or grief. I will be compassionate to any and all of your needs or desires without judgement or bias. During the bereavement process, I can and will provide a variety of services to ensure your family has time and space to create beautiful memories with your little one.
